Team Oaktown Live are in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street and the national/international Occupy Movement. We almost certainly would not have started this project were it not for OWS.
Team Oaktown Live occupy, and we live in Oakland, CA. While we share many of the same goals and sympathies, TOL is not a part of Occupy Oakland, not a part of any OO media committee, and do not consider ourselves bound by the resolutions of the OO General Assembly.
As of this writing (3/29/2012) the mood in OO is turning decidedly against livestreamers. Many OO activists see livestreaming as a threat because the authorities have access to the streams as well, and then can use them as evidence in court against protesters. Some OO Activists think that “transparency” is an FBI plot against them as revolutionaries, and don’t trust the idea.
Team Oaktown Live believes that any movement working for social justice and change on a scale like Occupy will INEVITABLY encounter state repression and police harassment. But livestreaming et al did not summon this harassment out of thin air.
TOL believes that truth and transparency is on the side of Occupy. We believe that truth and transparency are part of how Occupy will grow itself, and that secrecy and acting like an underground movement will hinder that growth.
For these reasons and others, Team Oaktown Live are independent media.
Hella Occupy Everywhere!
